It’s Byzantine and horrifying. The Devil selects the single person he plans to torture. He creates an entire false world around this person. The world is filled with awful but deceptively attractive people. Beautiful women who don’t have a single intelligent thing to say. Business men who achieve world-wide success through cheating and lobbying government shills to protect their semi-legal practices.
For the person being tortured, every avenue in life appears from a distance to hold great opportunity for happiness and accomplishment but like the grapes of Tantalus, when they are reached for, they crumble or disappear. Every ideal has a million incarnations to believe in which upon personal examination are pocked with ravaging disease.
Not one thing the victim turns to is real or clean. Not one person he meets is more than an evil illusion. And yet he’s prevented from giving up and ending his misery and he somehow continues posting answers to queries made to him by “people.”
